Overview[]
ETT is designed to be as realistic a simulation of physical table tennis as possible. The Physics of ETT and ETT Rules are intended to be faithful to real life competition.
The chief benefit of ETT compared to other table tennis VR games is in its physics simulation, which is generally agreed by casual and competition players alike to be the best in VR table tennis games, allowing transfer of skills between VR and real life. Competition table tennis players have generally been able to achieve very high rankings in ETT, and some players who have learned table tennis in ETT have found success in transitioning to real life table tennis competition. In addition, a scientific paper studying the transfer of skills between VR and real sport used ETT as a basis and found that playing ETT in virtual reality did improve beginner players' real life table tennis skills.
You can customise your virtual racquet by altering the spin, speed and throw parameters of each side of your racquet independently and customising its orientation relative to your controller. Various different orientations and racquet parameters can be saved for later use along with the presets already programmed in to the game.
ETT's most popular feature is Multiplayer gameplay, allowing players from across the world to play virtual matches of table tennis against each other. Single player mode allows you to play against an AI opponent with scalable ability and the option of a near-invincible "minimum mistakes mode" which continues a rally as long as possible.
A Ball Machine with programmable presets can feed you an unlimited sequence of user-defined ball launches, including parameters that traditional physical ball machines are unable to alter, such as point of origin and corkscrew spin. Also included in Minigames is Quadrants, Beer Pong, Service Practice and Free Practice.
Games can be played in 3 different environments (Studio, Chalet and Arena), with more to come, and the colours of the table and ball can be customised.
Benefits vs physical table tennis[]
Real life table tennis competition can, and should, never be replaced by virtual gaming, but ETT has some significant benefits that real life can not offer:
- Obviously, being able to play with anyone else on VR irrespective of distance, in the comfort of your own home is a massive benefit.
- Even if you can't find an opponent you want to play, the AI will always play against you.
- Table tennis robots cost many times more than ETT costs. Even the best table tennis robots do not have the features that the Ball Machine has, at a cost of higher than a VR headset + gaming computer + ETT costs combined.
- Balls in ETT can't be lost, destroyed, cracked, become dirty or even need to be picked off the ground - they simply get spawned by the user. This allows uninterrupted play in games and no need to ever refill a ball machine.
- To get a top level table tennis bat costs nothing in ETT but can cost hundreds of dollars in real life.
- In real life table tennis competition, airconditioner use is strongly discouraged except in the hottest of situations due to the sensitivity of a very light ball to even gentle air currents. In ETT, this is not a concern: crank the airconditioner up, aim a fan straight on to you.... just don't play with a ceiling fan if your controller has any chance of reaching it.
- Real life competition often requires purchase of a uniform, or at the very least the use of clothes. In ETT, no-one will be offended if you play in your underwear.
- Combining the two previous tips can allow you to comfortably play in hotter conditions, conditions where real life competition may get cancelled!
- There is no chance of contracting covid-19 or any other biological pathogen while playing ETT, and ETT competition will not be closed down by any pandemic.
